John Hunter's surgical instruments and operative procedures.

چکیده
Whereas John Hunter (1728-93) the anatomist, zoologist, physiologist, pathologist and museum collector receives unceasing eulogy, his work as a practising surgeon is curiously neglected. As far as can be determined, there are no studies devoted to his instruments and operative technique before a personal investigation in 1991, perhaps for the good reason that these would prove inconclusive. Nevertheless, the writer believes sufficient evidence is available to justify further communication.

Rotational Vertebral Artery Compression : Bow Hunter's Syndrome
Bow hunter's syndrome (BHS) is rare cause of vertebrobasilar insufficiency that arises from mechanical compression of the vertebral artery by head rotation. There is no standardized diagnostic regimen or treatment of BHS. Recently, we experienced 2 cases resisted continues medication and treated by surgical approach. In both cases, there were no complications after surgery and there were improv...
متن کاملPost-Operative Infections in Spine Procedures: A Brief Review
Background and Aim: Surgical site infection is an important complication after spinal surgery. Prevention and treatment of this complication requires more and reliable information. In this article, we investigated the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of post-operative infection in spine procedures by reviewing previous related studies. Methods and Materials/Patients: In this...
متن کاملGuiding Robotic Surgery with 3D Ultrasound: A Study of Instrument Size on Surgical Performance
Real-time 3D ultrasound (US) has become a promising new tool for guiding surgical procedures [1]. In particular, minimally invasive applications within a beating heart are now possible because of US's high tissue/blood contrast and a temporal resolution capable of capturing fast-moving cardiac structures [2]. Intra-cardiac beating heart procedures present new challenges such as limited workspac...
متن کاملPredicting Target Vessel Location for Improved Planning of Robot-Assisted CABG Procedures
Prior to performing a robot-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting procedure, a pre-operative computed tomography scan is used to assess patient candidacy and to identify the location of the target vessel. The surgeon then determines the optimal port locations to ensure proper reach to the target with the robotic instruments, while assuming that the heart does not undergo any significant chan...
متن کاملIntra-operative Ischemia Sensing Surgical Instruments
Surgical techniques rely heavily on adequate visualization of target anatomy. Particularly in laparoscopic and robotic laparoscopic surgery, the operative anatomy and the general view of the operative field is removed from the surgeon’s direct vision. Manipulation of peripheral anatomy (i.e. retraction) may lead to ischemia, infarction, and mechanical disruption. The primary goal of our researc...
